Acer rubrum:  Grows 40 to 60 feet in height; spread less than or equal to height, but occasionally much taller. National co-champion red maple trees are a 179' x 120' tree in St. Clair county MI and a 135' x 88' red maple tree in  the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, TN. Red maples are an excellent choice for lawn, park or for street plantings, but to get one that displays a long lasting pretty color you must get s selected cultivar.

    AUTUMN BLAZE® red maple, acer  x  fremanii rubrum  x  saccharinum "Jeffersred" Developed by Poplar Farms, Inc of Batavia, IL,  was chosen  maple TREE OF THE YEAR in 1997 by Iowa's Nursery and Landscape Professionals. Height to 50 feet, width to 40 feet, dense oval-rounded head with ascending branch structure and central leader, hardy to zone 4. Excellent fall color is orange-red to red. This is a very fast growing  tree, especially in southern climes.

'BRANDYWINE'  red maple was released  by the USDA US NATIONAL ARBORETUM in 1994. It is a cross between 'October Glory' red maple and 'Autumn Flame' red maple and has a beautiful red autumn color turning to brilliant long lasting purple-red. This  maple is a male plant and will not produce seedlings. 'Brandywine' red maple has a moderately columnar form, typically 25 feet tall and 12 feet wide in 12 years. Zones 4 - 8. For us,  Brandywine  grows faster than any of the other red maple varieties. Click here to view the National Arboretum fact sheet on this new variety. All these  maples released by the US National Arboretum have longer lasting and more vibrant fall color than older  varieties.
